Balinese Food : Nasi Jinggo

Hello everyone! Still curious about other local Balinese culinary delights? This time I bring Balinese food, namely Nasi Jinggo.

Nasi jinggo is a typical Balinese food wrapped in banana leaves, with small portions and a cheap price range of IDR 3000 to IDR 4000. Because the portions are small, buyers usually buy several packs to be full, but in my opinion 2 packs are enough for my happy tummy.

Nasi Jinggo was first introduced in 1980, and was first sold on Jalan Gajah Mada, Denpasar. Where it is located close to the Kumbasari market which is open 24 hours, nasi jinggo is sold from the afternoon until midnight, so many people who come to the market buy nasi jinggo to fill their stomachs.

It is still not clear where the name Nasi Jinggo came from. Nasi in English means rice, and according to one version, jinggo comes from the Hokkien language which means “one thousand five hundred”, which is the price of nasi jinggo at that time. But there are also those who say that the word jinggo comes from the movie “Djanggo” which was popular at that time. And the last version, the name jinggo comes from the word “jagoan” which is the motorbike riders who always eat nasi jinggo after they ride the motorbike in the middle of the night.

Generally Nasi Jinggo contains white rice, the size of a fist, accompanied by several side dishes such as shredded chicken, sambal goreng tempe, fried noodles, serundeng, and sambal. But there are also those who sell nasi jinggo with various other side dishes, shredded beef, squid, and so on. Besides white rice, there is also nasi jinggo with yellow rice.

Yellow rice is cooked with turmeric and some other spices that make it taste delicious. Yellow rice is usually used for nasi tumpeng, it’s a traditional style to celebrate a special event. If you want to know more about nasi tumpeng, you can read here Nasi Tumpeng For Your Special Day

You can find Nasi Jinggo on the roadside or traditional markets at night. Affordable prices and the warm atmosphere of the stalls make people visit to enjoy Nasi Jinggo with friends and family. Besides Nasi Jinggo, usually they also sell side dishes such as quail egg satay, intestine satay, fried sausage, and many more. Nasi jinggo is also often a way out for those who are hungry in the middle of the night and want something fast.
